Teachers attend reading conference

A dozen Greene County teachers spent two days last week as learners, attending the Iowa Reading Association annual summer conference June 28-29 in Ames.

The theme of this year’s conference was “Power of Reading.” The teachers attended various workshops on literacy topics such as Common Core, writing, vocabulary, comprehension, content area reading and technology.  Presenters were literacy specialists from across the state and authors and leaders in literacy from around the county. Participants also had the opportunity to attend various small group sessions and participate in leadership activities that will enhance their classroom instruction this fall.

Teachers attending the conference were Sandy Juhl, Connie Hoffman, Stormy Fish, Julie Neal, Tammy Mohr, Maigan Haley, Karen Murphy, Annette Coil, Maleea Gannon, Kim Braun,Jenny Fisher, and Nicole Timmons.

The ideas they learned will be taken back to their classrooms in the fall to help support their reading instruction. They also plan to share what they  learned with their grade level teams.

The district appreciates the extra time these teachers have spent on learning about current literacy practices that they can utilize in the 2016-17 school year, district literacy specialist Julie Neal said.
